Day 1 Field Trip Details

Time: 7:00–9:00pm. Meet before 6:50pm at the main gates of the Observatory, which is on the southern side of the site. Click here to see a pin.
Location: Sydney Observatory
1003 Upper Fort Street, Millers Point NSW 2000
Details:
In groups, we will rotate through 3 themed stations at the Observatory.
- History – The history and architecture component of the Observatory tour, you’ll discover the rich history of the site as a place of significance for Indigenous Australians and a centre for scientific activity including milling, defence, signalling, timekeeping, astronomy and meteorology.
- Astronomy – The astronomy component, you’ll step inside the Observatory’s astronomy domes to see historic and modern telescopes in action. From this spectacular location, you can get spectacular views across Sydney Harbour and view terrestrial objects through a telescope.
- Observations – The Observatory will set up telescopes on the lawn for observing some objects, as well as naked eye observing.
Groups will spend half an hour at each station. We can then spend the final half hour exploring the Observatory grounds.
Other important information:
- Numbers for the Sydney Observatory field trip are strictly limited. Please only attend if you have already RSVPd.
- Sydney Observatory is a 15–20 minute walk from the AusSTS conference venue. This will give you an hour to spare between the end of the Day 1 workshops and our meeting at the Observatory. We recommend that you use this time to grab a quick dinner in the city.
- Though we have not planned a dinner for the evening of Day 1, we have assembled a few local suggestions for those of you who are unfamiliar with Sydney CBD (click here to view these on an interactive map):
- Chat Thai Circular Quay
- The Flynn
- Republic Hotel & Taylors Rooftop
- Restaurant Hubert (has a more affordable happy hour menu until 6pm if you can get in)
Day 2 Social Gathering Venue Details

Time: Approximately 5:30pm. We will walk there together at the conclusion of the Closing Plenary.
Location: KittyHawk
16 Phillip Lane, Sydney NSW 2000 (view map)
Other details:
KittyHawk is a French restaurant and cocktail bar. We have reserved a semi-private area (‘the conservatory‘) to give us an opportunity to continue discussion and socialise in a less formal setting.
Light catering will be provided. Drinks can be purchased at the bar.
